Grit
On Friday morning PLB and I went for a walk (well actually I walked and PLB sat comfortably in his pushchair while I pushed him through the snow), stopping by an old lady we know to check up on her - she was fine, then on to watch the cars at the end of our road.
On our way to the end of our road we were passed by a lorry "spreading" (spraying) grit onto the road... Seriously - we had at that point had snow since Tuesday and they finally make it to our road, but are they kidding - what is the point in spraying grit onto 25cm of churned up snow? SEND IN THE SNOW PLOW FIRST!!! A little grit is not going to melt that much snow and make it safer to drive on.
People get frustrated that the country grinds to a halt with a mere sprinkling of snow and more than a sprinkling completely panics everyone and makes everyone compare the UK's response to snow with Scandinavia for example, but I usually stick up for British drivers as British cars don't have spiked tyres on them, but at least the authorities could help by plowing our streets before gritting them, then people would stand a chance at making it in to work.
